Devotional Thoughts on Matthew 2:13-23

by on September 10, 2009

In Matthew 2:13-23 Joseph, Mary and the toddler Jesus (he’s about 2) are shuttled back and forth to Egypt, led through dreams by an “angel of the Lord.” Having just become a father again last week, this passage asks me, How open are you to letting God lead you in the parenting of your children?

Of course, I also immediately think about infant baptism, in which parents who recently received the gift of life from God turn around and return the gift into God’s care, relinquishing control of the child, and professing to let God lead the child where God will.

Spiritually parenting my kids today is no different than it was for Joseph and Mary. And it’s really a metaphor for our entire vocations as God’s children. I am called to dream and to listen for God’s direction in parenting and throughout my life. May God give me grace on the journeys to Egypt, back, and beyond.
